Matt Pelissier and his band Revenir are currently based in New Jersey and in the process of recording their debut album. Matt’s no stranger to the music game, having been the original drummer for band My Chemical Romance, writing songs, and running his own recording studio.
Revenir didn’t have the best 2012 thanks to a break in at their studio, where equipment was taken, as-well as precious memories. But they are determined to make 2013 their year, with plans including a relief show taking place in New Jersey featuring local bands, to fund the replacement of equipment and all the material they lost being re-recorded, as-well as the release of the album.
Matt very kindly agreed to talk to me about the band and the relief show.
What inspired you to learn to play the drums?
My mother is my main inspiration for playing drums. In 4th grade all I wanted to play was the sax, my family didn’t have any money growing up. So, a 500 sax was out of the question. My mother came home one day with a pair of sticks and, a practice pad. She told me “this is what you get” so I learned drums. Bill Stevenson (descendents drummer) Really became my idol after that.
What bands would you say have inspired Revenir?
Jimmy eat world, Queens of the stone age, Muse, Weezer, and Megadeth I’d say.
How would you describe Revenir’s sound?
When i started writing these songs I was completely depressed, so most of the material has a darker, gloomier side. I also am an optimist to the core. I believe no matter how bad it gets, you can use that pain for better. So most of the songs have brighter, more uplifting sounding choruses. In a word I would describe Revenir as bittersweet.
Have any of your past experiences helped aid the band’s journey to recording an album?
Well I wouldn’t say my past experiences helped the band record. Running my own recording studio for 6 years (and having all the equipment) is what is making this possible. We like to experiment in the studio, while we track, so having myself engineer/produce the record lets us do whatever we want, with no restrictions.
Recently your studio was broken into, how has this affected the band as a whole?
The break-in broke our spirit, and turned our musical lives upside down. Losing all of our guitars, including Jay’s father’s guitar which was the last thing he had left of his father r.i.p.. Losing my computer with every song I’ve written in the last 6 years, which was like losing my musical diary. Tons of other assorted things were stolen as well. The one thing we lost worst of all was, the studio itself. It was our home away from home, our place of solace, where we became bros. Not cool.
On your twitter you have mentioned a show that you are planning featuring local bands from New Jersey, Could you tell us a bit more about that?
We are having a “Revenir relief” benefit show Feb 9 at the Music Hall at Obsession studios in Wayne N.J.. To help generate funds to buy equipment, and put out our record. So far we have 10 bands including ourselves on the bill: Atlas, Jarr, Handed to the thousands, McClinton to name a few. We are going to stream the show as well. It’s going to be awesome.
What do Revenir aspire to accomplish in the near, and far future?
All we want to do is, get on a tour and have a fair shake. Music is our life. Right now the agenda is to get the record done and out, then work our asses off.
Is there any advice you would give to anyone thinking of starting up their own band?
Advice in starting a band? First don’t start a band just for other people. Write music YOU love, who cares what other people think. Second find people like you find a wife. You need to be able to be together all the time, and you need to get along. lastly, start a band to help start a scene in your area, the scene has been slowly dying the last 20 years. Just listen to the radio, it’s all crap. Autotuned, triggered, pieced together, run of the mill junk. Start a band to change this.
For anyone interested, the ‘Revenir Relief’ show is an all ages show, February 9th, at the Music Hall at Obsession studios in Wayne New Jersey. $10 at the door, with all proceeds going to help ‘Revenir rebuild.’. The show will also be live-cast via the internet, and a paypal account set up for people to donate to.
